Solution

Open Cities Health Center, a nonprofit community health center that serves thousands in the Twin Cities metropolitan area, had a less than sophisticated process for processing in-person and online donations. Their team was tracking contributions through PayPal and Microsoft Excel. Whenever Open Cities captured a new donor, the team manually entered the donor’s contact information into their master Excel tracking sheet. Tracking online donations was incredibly tedious and required the team to contact their remote web developer. Open Cities Health Center’s Events Coordinator, Victoria Chu Yang Heu, decided the team needed a comprehensive online fundraising platform in time for their first Fall Gala.

Determined to find the best solution for Open Cities Health Center, Chu Yang Heu received demos from 12 different nonprofit online fundraising platforms. Their team ultimately chose [GiveSmart] because of the text-to-donate and recurring giving capabilities. Victoria began working with [GiveSmart] to start marketing its inaugural Fall Fundraising Gala. She was excited about the Center’s new fundraising event tools and grateful [GiveSmart] was there to help.

Impact

The Fall Fundraising Gala was not only a success in terms of dollars raised but also in hours saved. Using [GiveSmart’s] text-to-donate and live event thermometer, Open Cities Health Center raised over $4,000 within the first few minutes of the event. By using the credit card swiper provided by [GiveSmart], Open Cities Health Center eliminated the need for a donation box and handwritten checks. With a credit card swiper, the team closed out donations within an hour after the event. With promo codes for ordering tickets, Open Cities also offered discounted tickets for staff and their friends and families. It was also easy to track which donors attended and how much they donated, so the organization knows who to send VIP tickets to next year. Before [GiveSmart], the team had to dedicate an entire day after fundraising events to track donations.

Open Cities Health Center’s mission is to provide every individual in the Twin Cities metropolitan area access to quality primary and preventative healthcare, regardless of their ability to pay. Through donations and federal funding, the Center helps high risk and vulnerable populations access affordable healthcare.
